Veteran Bollywood actress, Nanda was one of the gems of Indian film industry. Her star performances in movies like, Ittefaq, Joru Ka Ghulam, Neend Hamare Khwab Tumhare, Kanoon, Pati Patni, Gumnaam, Akashdeep, Bedaag and Raja Saab will be remembered always.
The Maharastrian born actress was the daughter of a successful Marathi actor-producer-director. Though, her father died when she was just eight. She started off as a child-actress. Her debut film was Mandir in 1948. Her other films as a child actress was Jaggu, Angaarey, and Jagriti.
Nanda got her big break in the form of Toofan Aur Diya. It was his uncle, V. Shantaram who helped her to get the break. Her first Filmfare nomination was for the film Bhabhi, in the category of Best Supporting Actress. She played the lead role in the movie Chhoti Bahen. It was big hit and it made her a star overnight. Nanda won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for Anchal in the year 1960. He signed 8 films with Sashi Kapoor. Of those, Jab Jab Phool Khile became very popular and was a hit. Here, for the first time Nanda played the character of a modern westernized girl proving her versatility. Another hit film and well appreciated by the audience was Ghumnaam. Before she permanently retired she did a small role in Shor, Prem Rog Ahista Ahista, Mazdoor etc. She was one of the highest paid actresses of her time
The actress remained unmarried all her life. It is said some lieutenant colonel fell for the beautiful and talented actress. He even sent a marriage proposal to her mother but nothing really happened. Later, her brothers looked for many suitors but she turned down all of them. It was with the persuasion of Waheeda Rehman that she agreed to marry director Manmohan Desai. But, he died before they got married. She lived in Mumbai and interacted with close friends and family only. In 2014, she passed away at her own residence due to a severe heart attack.
